LORD Peter Mandelson has said that he was wrong to call US President Donald Trump “a danger to the world”.
Sir Keir Starmer’s pick for ambassador to the US made a grovelling U-turn for his 2019 comment.
He said yesterday: “I consider my remarks about President Trump as ill-judged and wrong.”
The climbdown comes as the Labour grandee tries to win over Mr Trump’s inner circle after his appointment sparked fury among Republicans.
But he told Fox News he believed there would be no problems.
Mandelson mentioned that he has not received any communication indicating any potential issues with his appointment from the president, the White House, or their staff.
He expressed confidence in his strong relationship with the US as well as his belief that President Trump will review his qualifications to determine what is in the best interest of their future collaboration.
“I think the president is a nice person, he’s a fair-minded person.”
Grilled about his past anti-Trump rants, Lord Mandelson said: “I consider my remarks about President Trump as ill-judged and wrong.
“I think that times and attitudes toward the president have changed.”
The former media strategist also expressed support for Trump’s international strategies, commenting that he believes Trump has the potential to be one of the most impactful American presidents during his lifetime.
Mandelson added: “I think that the United States and Britain, working together, can outsmart and keep ahead of the curve as far as China is concerned.
“[Trump] wants a dialogue with China, he wants to do deals with China. But he’s also not going to be naive about China.
“We face a challenge together from China, and we’ve got to make sure that we are able to deter that challenge or that threat when they’re having aggressive intents toward us.”
