During an interview with Buzzfeed’s The Puppy Interview, Lucy Hale revealed that she had tried out for the main role in Disney Channel’s Hannah Montana in the past. Although the role ultimately went to Miley Cyrus, Hale shared that the audition was a memorable experience for her.
Having auditioned for the role when she was just 14 years old and residing in Tennessee, the process involved a taped audition. Despite not landing the role, she considers it to be a pivotal moment in her life that contributed to her growth as an actress.
“It was the audition that made me want to be an actress. I remember that vividly, it was very cool.”
Reflecting on her career trajectory, particularly her time in Los Angeles spanning close to twenty years, Hale acknowledged the numerous auditions she undertook. She candidly admitted that she encountered more setbacks and disappointments than achievements along the way.
She humorously noted,
“For every ‘yes’ to an audition, there’s like a lineup of 200 that said ‘no.’”
In addition to Hannah Montana, Hale tried out for other big projects like Pitch Perfect, Hairspray, 50 Shades of Grey, and the Oscar-nominated film The Substance.
Lucy Hale got her first acting break at 15 with a single line on Nickelodeon’s Drake and Josh. She joked about her character’s short-lived role, saying, “In the scene, Drake [Bell] was like, ‘What’s your name?’ And I go, ‘Hazel!’ And he goes, ‘Like the nut?’ And I go, ‘Uh-huh!’ Groundbreaking.” Even though it was brief, that experience played a big part in kicking off her career.
The actress also mentioned that she stays close with her Pretty Little Liars co-stars and hinted at the possibility of a reunion down the line.
“We’ve been toying around with the idea the last couple of years of having a big reunion,”
she teased.
