National Highways has warned drivers of delays of up to 45 minutes and four miles of slow moving traffic on the M1.

A car fire near Wakefield caused the congestion with lane closures enforced. One lane is currently closed on the northbound carriageway between junctions 39 and 40.

West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service have extinguished the blaze.

National Highways said on X: “1 (of 4) lanes now remains closed on the M1 northbound between J39 and J40 near Wakefield following the car fire. West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service have extinguished the fire. Delays of up to 45 minutes on approach, approx. four miles of slow moving traffic.”
