Laken Riley was dedicated to running throughout her high school years at River Ridge in Woodstock, Georgia, and continued this passion while studying at the University of Georgia. Following her graduation, she pursued a career in nursing.
One day, as Riley set off for a run at the UGA campus intramural fields, she informed her roommate of her plans. Concern arose when she did not return as expected, prompting her roommate to contact campus police at 12:07 p.m. Shortly thereafter, officers discovered Riley unconscious with visible injuries behind Lake Herrick, having been missing for hours.
Authorities apprehended Jose Antonio Ibarra, 26, in connection with the incident. He faced several charges including malice murder, felony murder, aggravated battery, aggravated assault, false imprisonment, kidnapping, hindering a 911 call, and concealing the death of another. Ibarra was later found guilty on all charges and received a life sentence.
Now, his attorneys have filed a motion for a new trial, questioning the evidence presented during the case
