An Indiana man has been charged with attempted murder and feticide after her shot his estranged wife in the back, ending her pregnancy.
Jeremy McBride, aged 36, confessed to the police that he had recently purchased a gun with the intention of killing Kayla Netherland, her baby, and himself, as per a report by WXIN.
According to the authorities, McBride and Netherland were no longer in a relationship, and McBride was distressed because his wife had become pregnant despite not being yet divorced from him.
McBride disclosed to investigators that he had hoped to reconcile with Netherland, who was five months pregnant. He claimed that on the day of the incident, they had been spending time together and shopping at Goodwill. He mentioned that during their conversation, he suddenly decided to shoot Netherland, stating that his actions seemed reasonable at that moment, as detailed in the affidavit.
He shot her five times in the back, and she never saw it coming, he said.
A friend of Netherland’s arrived at the home moments after the shooting and saw McBride standing over her. Police wrote in the report that McBride looked at the friend and then walked out the front door without saying a word. The friend called 911, reporting that she thought McBride had killed Netherland.
Indianapolis Police said that license plate readers tracked his vehicle and a traffic stop was initiated. McBride was taken into custody without incident, and a firearm was found in his vehicle.
Netherland has undergone multiple surgeries since the shooting and is expected to survive. Doctors were unable to save her baby, however.
