An Illinois man found himself in trouble late Wednesday night when he was arrested and charged with aggravated assault on a police officer and resisting arrest. The cause of the commotion? Allegedly, he charged at an officer with a ukulele in hand.
According to a criminal complaint, Ledreck K. Kekona, 41, was accused of brandishing the ukulele in a raised and ready position, gripping it by the arm of the instrument. This action led the officer to fear that he was in imminent danger of being struck by the musical device, as reported by the Northwest Herald.
The complaint said the resisting charged stemmed from his refusal to put his arms behind his back.
The complaint did not say why police were dealing with Kekona to begin with.
Following the incident, McHenry County Judge Cynthia Lamb presided over the case and granted Kekona release on Thursday under certain conditions. These included prohibitions on possessing firearms or any other dangerous weapons and agreeing to pretrial supervision. The judge did not comment on whether a ukulele could be classified as a dangerous weapon.
A preliminary hearing is set for May 8.
