A man has died after a car ploughed into a crowd of people at 60mph following a family argument at an engagement party, according to neighbours.

The victim, who has not been named, was killed and several others injured after being struck by the vehicle during the horror rampage in Sheffield. Emergency services rushed to College Close, in the Burngreave area of the city shortly after 2pm yesterday (Wednesday, December 28) to reports of ‘violence and disorder’.

Police said during the 999 call a car hit a group of people resulting in the death of a 46-year-old man. Another person was injured and remains in a serious condition in hospital.

A 23-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder while another man, aged 55, was held on suspicion of attempted murder. Both remain in police custody being quizzed by detectives.

Residents living near the scene said the violence broke out following a family row and the man who died may have been an innocent bystander. One local, who did not wish to be named, said: “There had been an engagement party at a house and an argument broke out over something.

“I believe somebody was not happy this particular couple are together and its just escalated from there. A woman has got hurt and a family member has called another relative who has arrived at the scene in their car and driven down it at about 60mph.

“We were told the bloke who died may not have been involved in the argument at all and was just in the wrong place. It’s very tragic.”

Another resident added: “All I know there was a bit of a party going on and there was a row. Somebody has belted down the road and just not stopped. There were police everywhere. You don’t expect it on a quiet residential street.”

Detective Chief Inspector Andrew Knowles, of South Yorkshire Police, said: “We are now dealing with a murder investigation and understand the distress this will cause to those directly affected and the wider community. We have a large cordon in the area and are conducting CCTV and house to house enquiries.

“We’ll be patrolling throughout the night to offer reassurance and to speak to anyone who may hold information or feel concerned.

“If you have any information which could assist enquiries, please report this to us either online or by calling 101. We are also keen to hear from anyone who lives in the area and has CCTV, doorbell or dashcam footage.”

Alternatively, contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
