A man from New York has been given a 30-year prison sentence after admitting to fatally stabbing his pregnant wife and causing serious harm to his 6- and 9-year-old daughters.
Drew Garnier’s lengthy prison term will be followed by 15 years of supervision after release, with a prohibition on any contact with his daughters until at least 2056, as confirmed by the Delaware County District Attorney’s Office.
The incident took place on September 4, 2024, resulting in the death of Samantha Garnier and the unborn child. In March, Drew Garnier accepted guilt for manslaughter and aggravated assault through a plea bargain. District Attorney Shawn J. Smith mentioned that while the deal wasn’t ideal, it aimed to shield the children from the distress of a trial and enable them to concentrate on recovering from the tragic events.
Samantha Garnier’s father, who has adopted the surviving daughters, read an impact statement at the sentencing hearing saying he believed his son-in-law killed his daughter upon learning that their child was another girl. “He had wanted a boy,” the father said.
Of his granddaughters, he said, “I am their father now. I will protect them.”
Garnier had requested that Judge John L. Hubbard allow him to contact the girls, but he agreed with the DA’s objection and granted “full stay away orders with expiration dates in the year 2056.”
