Will County Sheriff's Office employee Daniel T. Herod arrested by Homeland Security, facing local child sex assault charges

JOLIET, Ill. (WLS) — An employee from the Will County Sheriff’s Office was reportedly taken into custody by Homeland Security on Thursday, according to a post made by the sheriff’s office on social media on Friday morning.

Daniel T. Herod, aged 41, has been working with the sheriff’s office since May 2010, with his most recent position being a deputy correctional officer at the Will County Adult Detention Facility, as stated by the sheriff’s office.

The circumstances surrounding the arrest were not immediately clear.

According to the Will County court records, charges were filed against Herod on Friday for predatory criminal sexual assault of a victim under 13 and criminal sexual assault of a family member under 18, with the incidents dating back to 2021.

Homeland Security is handling the investigation, the sheriff’s office said.

Herod appeared in Will County court in Joliet Friday morning.

He’s being held in Kankakee County Jail.

Neighbors near Herod’s home in Elwood said there was a chaotic scene there Thursday, as DHS took him into custody.

At one point they say there was a loud explosion.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement with DHS shared a statement Friday, confirming a criminal law enforcement operation in Elwood Thursday.

They said there is no threat to the public, and the matter remains an ongoing investigation.

Herod is next due in Will County court on April 3.
