Who was Mick Rock ?

Mick Rock, the photographer who took iconic images of stars like David Bowie and Queen, has died at the age of 72.

Once nicknamed “the man who filmed the 70s”, Rock also worked with the likes of Iggy Pop, Blondie, Lou Reed.

A statement on his Twitter page read: “It is with heavy hearts that we share that our beloved psychedelic renegade Mick Rock has made Jung’s journey to the other side.”


Sharon Osbourne paid tribute and said that his work “would live forever.”

She added: “We lost a legend, a true Mick Rock artist.”

Early life

Michael David Rock was born in 1948 in Hammersmith, London, the son of David and Joan.He was educated at Emanuel School in London and Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, and graduated with a degree in Medieval and Modern Languages.While at Cambridge, he developed an interest in 19th century romantic poetry, primarily the works of Rimbaud, Baudelaire, Shelley, and Byron, and his first appearance in the press came after he was arrested for possession of marijuana.

Personal life

Rock lived in New York City on Staten Island with his wife and his daughter.

His death was announced by his family on November 18, 2021. It was reported that he was 72 years old at the time of his death.

‘A photographic poet’


Her husband Ozzy Osbourne was among the other stars Rock captured, along with Pink Floyd and former singer Syd Barrett, T-Rex’s Marc Bolan and the Sex Pistols.

Rock’s famous album covers included a photo of Queen with their faces lit up against a black background for Queen II; the stark black and white photo of Reed’s Transformer; and a shirtless Iggy Pop for Raw Power by The Stooges.

Statement

The statement continued: “Those who had the pleasure of existing in its orbit know that Mick was always so much more than ‘The Man Who Shot 70’.

“He was a photographic poet, a true force of nature who spent his days doing exactly what he loved, always in his deliciously outrageous way.”

He noted how “the stars seemed to align effortlessly for Mick when he was behind the camera”, describing him as “a man fascinated with the image” who created “some of the most magnificent images rock music has ever seen”.

‘One of a kind of him’

Bowie’s former bandmate Mike Garson said he was “very sad” to learn of Rock’s death, and wrote: “He was one of a kind of him with an eye for aesthetics and seizing the right moments. .

“It was also a lot of fun traveling with him in the days of the [Mars] spiders. Mick gave a lot to this planet and he adored David. Mick’s journey will continue.”

In addition to being Bowie’s official photographer, he also directed videos for Jean Genie and Space Oddity.

He continued to work with modern artists such as Miley Cyrus, Lady Gaga, Snoop Dogg, and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

Rock said Lou Reed and David Bowie were “true friends and true heroes”


Rock was born in London in 1948 and studied at Cambridge University, where he began taking photographs of local concerts and made contacts, including Cambridge native Barrett and Mick Jagger’s younger brother Chris.

His own life was captured on camera in Barnaby Clay’s 2016 film, Shot! The Rock Psychospiritual Mantra, which Rock dedicated to the “timeless genius of David Bowie and Lou Reed.”

“They made an important contribution to developing my own sensibilities,” he told Rolling Stone in 2017.

“When I was in trouble, they both helped me financially. They bought my impressions. When I was in the hospital for heart bypass surgery, the first flowers waiting for me were from Lou and David.”

Paying tribute, Charlatans frontman Tim Burgess said rock “made music seem so exciting.”

Music journalist Simon Price wrote: “‘Iconic’ is an overused word, but Mick Rock photos are just that.”

The cause of his death has not yet been announced.
