‘These Parasites Had It Coming’: Luigi Mangione Charged With Murder of Brian Thompson

A man named Luigi Mangione was reported missing in California shortly before he was accused of shooting and killing Brian Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, in New York.

His mother contacted the San Francisco police on November 18, stating that she had not heard from him since July and that he was supposed to be working in the city. She mentioned that he was employed by TrueCar in San Francisco, but the company had shut down, and their phone line was no longer in service.

While a spokesperson from TrueCar mentioned that Mangione, who is 26 years old, had worked for them in 2023, it is uncertain if he had ever worked at the location provided by his mother to the police the previous month.

New York Police said that Mangione arrived in New York on November 24 — less than a week after his mother reported him missing.

Mangione was arrested in Pennsylvania on Monday, days after he reportedly killed Thompson, 50, in Manhattan. He was apprehended at a McDonald’s in Altoona after an employee believed he resembled widely publicized photos of Thompson’s alleged killer and called the police.

In addition to allegedly having a gun with a silencer and fake IDs, Mangione reportedly also had a two-page manifesto that decried the healthcare industry as “parasites.” Shortly after Mangione’s arrest, New York officials held a press coverage in which they hinted at the motive in Thompson’s murder. NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said Mangione, a data engineer with a master’s from the University of Pennsylvania, “has some ill will towards corporate America.”

Mangione is charged with firearm offenses in Pennsylvania, to which he has pleaded not guilty. He has challenged his extradition to New York — where he is charged with Thompson’s second-degree murder.

Mangione remains jailed without bail.

“The judge could set $1 million bail. It could be $5 million bail, but damn it, you get bail. That’s what you do,” Mangione’s attorney, Tom Dickey, said following Tuesday’s court hearing.
