‘Contaminated’ ice cream sold nationwide recalled over ‘life-threatening’ ingredient hidden inside – don’t trust label

A POPULAR ice cream brand sold across the US has been urgently recalled after a “life-threatening” allergen was discovered in mislabeled tubs.

More than 6,600 containers of a Chocolate Truffle ice cream are being pulled from shelves due to undeclared almonds.

The issue was disclosed by the US Food and Drug Administration in a June 10 alert.

Tubs of Breyers Chocolate Truffle Ice Cream, which are sold nationwide, were mistakenly filled with a different type of ice cream.

Specific locations where the mislabeled tubs were sold were not identified, per the FDA.

Due to a factory error, some cartons labeled Chocolate Truffle were mistakenly filled with Rocky Road ice cream, which contains almonds.

Unilever, which owns Breyers, initiated the recall on June 2 after discovering the label did not accurately reflect the contents inside.

While the tub said “may contain tree nuts,” the Rocky Road flavor listed almonds clearly on its lid, creating a dangerous mismatch.

“Rocky Road Ice was packaged with Chocolate Truffle Ice Cream labeled tub and a Rocky Road Ice Cream lid,” the FDA noted.

The agency classified the incidents as a Class II recall.

This means the product could cause temporary or medically reversible harm, though the risk of serious injury is considered remote.

Still, people with almond allergies face a serious threat if they consume the mislabeled product.

Breyers issued a statement warning that individuals with almond allergies should avoid eating the product to prevent potentially severe or life-threatening allergic responses.

“The safety and quality of our products is our top priority,” Unilever added.

The recall only affects one lot of 1.5-quart tubs, according to the manufacturer.

A report disclosed that “roughly 12” out of 6,668 recalled containers are believed to have been affected.

Recall Details

Breyers Ice Cream Warning:

  • Product: Rocky Road Ice Cream packaged in Chocolate Truffle tubs
  • Size: 1.5 quarts
  • Recall Number: H-0017-2025
  • Classification: Class II (may cause reversible or temporary health effects)
  • Lot Code: JUL1026GB3
  • UPC: 077567457288
  • Affected Quantity: 6,668 cases (about 12 tubs per case)
  • Issue: Undeclared almonds, tubs are mislabeled and may trigger allergic reactions
  • What to Do: Do not eat if allergic to almonds.

However, officials did not disclose exactly how many of the recalled containers had already been purchased or consumed.

The packaging confusion has sparked concern over whether allergy warnings are consistent and clearly displayed.

Tree nuts, like almonds, are one of the top eight allergens that must be declared on food packaging in the US.

In this case, the discrepancy between the tub and lid could mislead buyers with severe allergies.

The error follows another ice cream recall in May 2025 involving a separate brand.

Wells Enterprises recalled nearly 18,000 containers of ice cream and frozen yogurt due to the risk of hard plastic contamination.

That recall affected 22 different flavors of frozen desserts.

No illnesses or injuries have been reported in connection to either recall at this time.

The FDA continues to monitor the Breyers situation and has urged customers to double-check labels before consuming.
