Sarah Michelle Gellar Explains Why She Changed Her Mind About The ‘Buffy The Vampire Slayer’ Reboot: “I Did Shock Myself By Agreeing”

Sarah Michelle Gellar addressed Buffy the Vampire Slayer fans directly amid the recent news that the classic series is getting a reboot on Hulu.

Gellar, who is said to be close to making an appearance in the upcoming series, had previously expressed opposition to the idea of reviving the supernatural show. However, she revealed in a recent message to fans that her perspective shifted after discussions with director Chloe Zhao and writers/producers Nora Zuckerman and Lilla Zuckerman.

On social media, Gellar shared that she was connected with the Academy Award-winning director to explore the potential of bringing back Buffy.

“I was amazed that Chloé was familiar with my work, but despite my reservations, I initially expressed doubts about reviving the show. Historically, we had always been on the same page regarding this, but this time, I sensed a different passion in her voice,” Gellar described. “Ultimately, I agreed to the meeting (largely to meet Chloé in person), and what was intended to be a brief coffee gathering extended into an immersive four-hour experience. We shared moments of laughter and tears, resonating deeply on the significance of the show to both of us.”

Gellar admitted, “I did shock myself by agreeing to continue the conversation.”

The actress revealed that she remained in conversation with Zhao over “the next few years” before Nora and Lilla were added to the creative team.

Gellar went on to promise fans that she would not return to the series unless they got it “right.”

“I promise you, we will only make this show if we know we can do it right. And I will tell you that we are on the path there,” she vowed.

According to early reports of the reboot, Gellar will only appear in a recurring capacity and will not be leading the series. Instead, the series will reportedly feature a new slayer, which sounds like Buffy may be serving as a mentor to the new young hero. She will also serve as an executive producer on the series.

It’s unclear if other members of the original cast will also be reprising their roles. However, Deadline notes it “is considered likely.”

Dolly Parton, who was a silent producer on the original series, will also be returning as a producer. However, Buffy creator Joss Whedon will not be involved in the reboot after he was accused of misogyny and fostering a toxic work environment in a bombshell 2022 New York Magazine piece.

For those looking to catch up on the series, Buffy the Vampire Slayer is streaming now on Hulu.
