Full-time: Maroons spring great escape

NSW get one last play. They throw everything at them. Penitani with space down the left. They swing back left.

Queensland scramble and there’s a knock-on. Maroons win. That’s one of the gutsiest wins you’ll ever see. Never looked like winning. Until they did. Incredible.

Field goal: Brown breaks the deadlock

And now, the arm wrestle. Sound, wet weather football from both sides and Queensland now finishing stronger. Both sides kicking low and into the corner and then Caitlan Johnston gearing up for a big run… spills it. That’s tough.

Queensland with a real chance with less than three minutes. And Lauren Brown, she’s nailed a field goal. Defenders bearing down, into the breeze, in an absolute quagmire, that’s a hell of a play. Ninety seconds left.

Try: Aitken breaks them open

And Tarryn Aitken drags it straight back. That’s what we’ve been waiting for. A tiring defence and she takes advantage at first receiver. Slipping across a flat footed defence, dummying to inside runners once, twice, thrice and then finds Yasmin Clydesdale.

Takes her on, breezes past on the outside and Lauren Brown nails the conversion.

We’re all tied up in Newcastle with seven minutes to play. Golden point anyone?

Try: Sergis steal sets up Penitani breakthrough

Jess Sergis. Stop it. It’s a pet play and she’s one of the best in the game. But still. Stop it. She’s stolen the ball one-on-one from Julia Robinson to send NSW on the attack.

And straight away Corban Baxter, with great vision and excellent execution, sends a cut-out ball skimming across to Tiana Penitani, who dives over in the corner.

Pearson falls on her backside trying to convert from the sideline but the Sky Blues edge their lead back out to six. Queensland with a short kick-off to regain possession straight away though.

Try: Maroons break through

Queensland, just try and keep them down. Classic stuff from the banana benders and Shenae Ciesiolka is in on the left edge. Ali Brigginshaw pulling the string in that one, pumping a cut out ball across the face of Isabelle Kelly as she’s dragged in and out of position.

A tough kick in the wind and rain for Lauren Brown and it swings away. NSW lead by two with 14 minutes left.

Eder: Qld need to target Sergis

Queensland almost jag a try

An error on kick defusal by Emma Tonegato gives Queensland a rare chance and Destiny Brill, by gar she almost took it. Again four NSW defenders to turn her away. Maroons suddenly full of life.

Brigginshaw forcing a repeat set. NSW desperate and Upton spills the ball pressing the line. Kezie Apps with a telling play and it’s official – raining cats and possibly dogs in Newcastle.

Sergis and Chapman left limping

Proper concerns for Jess Sergis after a high ball goes up and plenty of contact. Sergis was limping around after that awkward tackle just before half-time and NSW have a couple of injury concerns out of that play. Again it’s a knee/lower leg issue for her.

Sergis and Jaime Chapman both worse for wear but they’re battling on for now. A high tackle on Izzy Kelly sends the Sky Blues on the attack.

NSW start all guns blazing again

The Sky Blue all over it to start the half again. Their first set they effectively went the length of the field and were able to put in an attacking grubber.

Queensland only managed 27 metres in their set and Ali Brigginshaw was kicking off the back foot. Feels like a matter of time for NSW here. Although Jess Sergis is limping around out there and the Maroons are muscling up in defence. First Corban Baxter, then Keeley Davis almost shoving their way over from close range. Really desperate stuff to stay in the game from Queensland.

Kick-off: NSW are 35 minutes from a series win

Righto, we’re back again in Newcastle. Queensland kick us off and the Sky Blues are one more half away from sewing up the series.

Game three is up in Townsville, I imagine it’s a tad warmer and drier, but right here, right now, the Maroons are trying to grind their way back into this contest. It’ll take a hell of a turnaround, all the momentum in that first half with NSW.
