Both men were arrested and charged on Thursday, police said.

James Robinson and Angel Contreras, who are both 21 years old, have been accused of various crimes, which include trying to kill an off-duty Chicago police officer during an incident that occurred last summer.

The events unfolded on July 23, 2024, as the off-duty officer was preparing to commute to work, getting into his car in the vicinity of 109th Street and Campbell. At that moment, a group of individuals, armed with guns, approached him, leading to a confrontation that escalated into a gunfight.

The suspect’s dark-colored sedan was found shot out about a mile away, on 112th Street.

Now, police are connecting Robinson and Contreras to that attempted robbery and multiple other carjackings.
