5-year-old Akron girl injured by razor blade inside Valentine's Day card, police investigating

Kaliauna Wright was presented with the card at a celebration held at Hatton CLC and the child who handed it to her was unaware of the blade hidden inside.

AKRON, Ohio — A 5-year-old girl Akron girl is recovering after being injured by a razor blade found inside her Valentine’s Day card.

The incident took place during a Valentine’s Day event at Hatton Community Learning Center where Kaliauna received the card that caused the injury. According to her mother Tanekea, Kaliauna came home and as she opened the card, she accidentally cut her finger.

Upon noticing her daughter in tears and the blood from her finger, Tanekea shared her immediate reaction of shock and distress upon realizing the presence of the hidden blade in the card.

Akron Public Schools confirmed that the blade was inside a sealed envelope, which had been purchased by a family at a local retail store. According to the district, the student who distributed the cards had no knowledge of the blades.

The incident left Kaliauna’s parents shaken.

“It does kind of hurt me that I put my faith in the school, especially public school at that, and they just let me down,” an emotional Tanekea said.

The Akron Police Department has launched an investigation into the incident. Meanwhile, school officials urged families to inspect any Valentine’s Day cards brought home as a precaution.

As for Kaliauna, she’s expected to make a full recovery.
