A BRAZILIAN actress could face a police probe after revealing on live television that she gifted her daughter a vibrator for her 12th birthday.
Claudia Raia, aged 58, admitted that she gave the “disgraceful” present to her daughter Sophia Raia when she turned just 12 years old.
The soap opera actress and singer, who welcomed her third child two years ago, recently discussed how she managed to maintain a healthy sex drive after going through menopause.
She boasted of owning 17 vibrators in an interview with Portuguese television program Goucha, before making the scandalous disclosure.
In the interview she promoted her play Menopausia (Menopause) whilst stressing the importance of sex toys and masturbation.
“Toys help a lot. Today, vibrators are considered toys that require a doctor’s prescription,” she added.
Referring to the controversial gift to her daughter, Raia said: “When she turned 12, I gave her a vibrator,”
After giving the toy to her daughter she said: “Go investigate yourself, you’ll find out what you like.”
The revelation ignited public backlash on social media, causing online critics to blast her reckless parenting.
One Instagram user said that she didn’t “respect the innocence of children”.
Another commented that the dirty gift was “ridiculous and unnecessary”.
On X, formerly known as Twitter, disgusted users turned against her, with one account saying: “Claudia Raia is very clueless.”
Another added: “In the past mothers gave dolls.”
Raia then backtracked on her comments on Wednesday, posting Instagram stories explaining that her comments had been misinterpreted.
She mentioned, “I have always promoted open communication with my kids on various subjects, including sex education, in a respectful and age-appropriate manner.”
“As a mother, my priority has always been to create an environment of trust and information.
“However, I understand that each family has its own way of dealing with these issues, and I respect that.”
It has been reported by Brazilian news source Metropoles that Minas Gerais Congresswoman Cristiano Caporezzo lodged a complaint with the São Paulo Civil Police against Raia. The complaint alleges that Raia breached Article 241-D of the Children and Adolescents Statute by exposing minors to inappropriate content.
Raia has previously said that she faced backlash for her decision to become a mother in 2023 when she was 56 years old.
Her daughter Sophia, who is now 22 years old and a mother, has not commented on the police investigation.
Claudia Raia’s eldest child Enzo, aged 27, is a social media influencer.
Sex therapist Tamara Zanotelli said Raia’s decision to gift her 12-year-old child a vibrator was concerning.
“People are increasingly willing to understand the role of vibrators beyond pleasure,” Zanotelli said.
“That’s why there are even cases of doctors recommending their use.
“But if we think about a mother giving her 12-year-old daughter a vibrator, there are other issues.”
Zanotelli also said that whilst many girls can start to understand sexuality before they become a teenager, providing the sex toy at such a young age was very troubling.
