The family of Ellen Greenberg, along with Philadelphia officials, have agreed to reopen the investigation into her death just moments before a civil case was scheduled to begin. This settlement marks a significant development after 14 years since Greenberg’s passing, as the Philadelphia Medical Examiner’s Office will review and reinvestigate the circumstances surrounding her death.
Ellen Greenberg was found stabbed 20 times in the head, back, neck, and chest. Her death was ruled a suicide.
Joseph Pedraza Jr., the attorney representing the Greenberg family, disclosed that the agreement entails the Philadelphia Medical Examiner’s Office conducting a prompt review of Ellen Greenberg’s death in 2011. The prompt resolution was facilitated by a sworn statement from Dr. Marlon Osbourne, the former assistant medical examiner in charge of the autopsy, expressing a revised opinion that Greenberg’s manner of death should be reclassified from suicide.
Dr. Osbourne initially ruled her death a homicide before changing the ruling to suicide.
Dr. Osbourne articulated his change of professional opinion publicly, attributing it to newly reviewed information from the Philadelphia Police Department and consultations with Dr. Lucy Rorke-Adams, a noted pediatric neuropathologist. He admitted uncertainties regarding the events surrounding Greenberg’s demise, including doubts about the reported forced entry, the possibility of moving Greenberg’s body by someone inside the apartment, and the results of Dr. Lindsey Emery’s neuropathological assessment of Greenberg’s cervical segment sample.
