Reese Witherspoon is clearing the air after rumors surfaced suggesting that Kate Winslet ‘doesn’t like’ her.
The drama unfolded when the Legally Blonde star, aged 48, casually mentioned that a certain actress had stopped communicating with her after a light-hearted roast at a British awards event.
This led to widespread speculation that Witherspoon was referring to her fellow Oscar-winner, the 49-year-old Winslet, fueling a viral theory about a concealed feud between the two.
Refusing to let the rumor mill spiral out of control, Reese took to Instagram Stories on Saturday to clarify the situation, stating, ‘Hey guys… just spoke to my very dear friend for years, Kate W. We laughed about this stupidity. Please do not believe the internet.’
She continued, ‘We are good friends and have never had any falling out.’
In a follow-up post, the Sweet Home Alabama star added, ‘This is completely UNTRUE… so silly!’

The drama began on Thursday when the Legally Blonde star, 48, casually mentioned that an unnamed actress had stopped talking to her after a lighthearted roast at a British awards ceremony; (seen in October 2024)
The internet sleuths became convinced that Winslet was the unnamed actress, in part due to Witherspoon’s previous tribute to the star at the BAFTA/LA Cunard Britannia Awards in November 2007.
‘I always wanted to be a European movie star, wear giant sunglasses, elaborate neck scarves, smoke hand-rolled cigarettes, and have savoir faire and gravitas,’ Witherspoon’s speech began, according to JustJared, who uncovered parts of the transcript on a Witherspoon fan site.
‘Imagine my good fortune when Kate Winslet moved into my neighborhood, rang my door bell and said, (insert British accent here) “Dahling, Sam is off shooting, and I believe our children are the same age. Could they possibly have a play date and oh, by the way, it’s almost 9 o’clock and I’ve had nothing to do drink, do you have any wine?”
She then went on speak about Winslet’s ‘fearlessness’ when it came to her famous nude scene in the 2001 film Iris.
‘When I saw her in and she took off all her clothes and jumped into that lake, I thought, “Wow, I bet that lake is really cold.” And then I thought, “Wow, There’s an actor without fear,”‘ Witherspoon teased.
She then told the crowd that she couldn’t share any personal stories about her and Winslet because ‘they’re all too bawdy or tawdry or drunken to tell.’
The ’embarrassing’ stories in question, according to the fan site, were ‘the time [Witherspoon and Winslet] contemplated laser hair removal and… or that time on the freeway when they pulled over and.. or that really funny thing that happened when they were both in their underwear.’
In her People interview, Witherspoon explained that the actress, who many think is Winslet, has asked her to speak at the event on her behalf.
Reese wasn’t having it and, on Saturday, took to Instagram Stories to set the record straight, writing, ‘Hey guys… just spoke to my very dear friend for years, Kate W. We laughed about this stupidity. Please do not believe the internet’

Along with the star’s name, Witherspoon did not reveal the name of the ceremony or when it took place.
‘It literally haunts me,’ she confessed before recounting the ’embarrassing’ moment for the outlet.
‘So this friend of mine — who I didn’t really know that well, but she was a very serious, proper actress — she asked me to give her an award,’ she explained.
‘But I had never been to this award ceremony, so I thought it was like a roast. So I got up and I roasted her.’
However, Witherspoon quickly realized that her ‘funny’ speech wasn’t landing with the event’s audience.
‘The tone [of the event] was British and elegant and classy. And I was like, ‘Remember the time we got laser hair removal?!” Witherspoon recalled with a laugh.
She added: ‘I’m still embarrassed about it.’
‘I thought it was so funny and it was just, I had the wrong audience,’ she said of the speech.
‘It was pretty bad. Yeah. Not even kidding, she doesn’t talk to me anymore. Oh well,’ the Oscar-winner concluded.
