Elon Musk, a technology mogul and senior advisor at the White House, has branded Senator Mark Kelly as a “traitor” following Kelly’s return from a recent trip to Ukraine where he stressed the importance of American support for the war-torn nation.
Kelly, a former astronaut for NASA and a pilot in the US Navy, had traveled to Ukraine over the weekend, a country that has been dealing with a Russian invasion for more than three years.
The timing of Kelly’s visit coincided with President Donald Trump’s efforts to quickly resolve the conflict, which has stirred controversy in US foreign policy due to his pivot towards Moscow and suspension of military assistance to Kyiv.
“Just left Ukraine. What I saw confirmed that we can’t abandon the Ukrainian people. Everyone wants this war to end, but any agreement must safeguard Ukraine’s security and shouldn’t give in to (Russian President Vladimir) Putin,”
Kelly posted on social media platform X.
“Donald Trump is trying to undermine Ukraine’s position, and we deserve an explanation for that,”
he added in another post regarding his trip.
Musk, the world’s wealthiest individual and a major donor to Trump, responded to Kelly on X with a blunt,
“You are a traitor.”
Kelly quickly fired back, saying,
“Traitor? Elon, if you can’t see that defending freedom is a core principle of what makes America great and keeps us safe, maybe it’s best to leave it to those of us who do.” Later, he referred to Musk as “not a serious guy”
and suggested he should focus on building rockets instead, according to NBC.
California Senator Adam Schiff backed up his fellow Democrat Kelly.
“Mark Kelly is a retired Navy pilot, astronaut, and devoted public servant. He’s a hero. Elon Musk? He’s a self-centered coward. Hope that clarifies things,”
Schiff tweeted.
Republican Congressman Don Bacon also shared his thoughts on the matter.
“It’s not decent, it’s not right. I don’t always see eye-to-eye with Senator Kelly, but we don’t label each other traitors, and I think this reflects poorly on the White House,”
he told CNN correspondent Manu Raju.
