In 2003, Scott Peterson was found guilty of killing his pregnant wife, Laci Peterson, and their unborn child, Conner. Originally sentenced to death, the verdict was later overturned, and he is now serving life in prison without the possibility of parole.
The Los Angeles Innocence Project has stepped in, petitioning to reverse Peterson’s conviction. They are presenting new scientific findings and testimonies supporting Peterson’s claim of innocence.
The Innocence Project’s legal team contends that critical aspects of the case were not adequately investigated. They point to a break-in at a neighboring home and the subsequent arson of the intruders’ vehicle as key events that were overlooked. Furthermore, they are raising concerns about potential violations of the Brady rule by both the Modesto Police Department and the Stanislaus County District Attorney’s Office.
The attorneys further claim that medical research has advanced since Peterson’s conviction and now indicates Conner’s fetal growth was consistent with a date of death later than prosecutors presented at trial. Prosecutors maintain that Conner was likely expelled from Laci’s decaying body shortly before the remains were discovered.
