A South Carolina man who was reported missing last week was later arrested after he was found alongside human remains, police said.
Charles Antwine Jr., 56, and Christy Ward went missing from a home in Brunswick County. A deputy found a submerged vehicle at Lynches River boat landing at Riverside Cemetery on June 14. The vehicle was linked to Antwine and an address close to Lake City, as reported by The Post and Courier.
Upon inspection, no individuals were found inside the sunken car. Deputies, conducting a welfare check at the specified address, detected an odd smell and received no answer at the door. Subsequently, with a search warrant in hand, officers entered the residence and discovered Antwine seated on a couch, according to The Post and Courier.
Florence County police said they discovered human remains inside containers that were taped shut.
Florence County Sheriff TJ Joye revealed to WMBF that containers with body parts, seemingly dismembered, were uncovered inside the residence. Joye described the scene as resembling something from a nightmare or horror film, stating it was extremely gruesome.
Ward is still missing as the remains are pending identification.
Meanwhile, Antwine is charged with desecrating human remains. He remains jailed without bond as police expect to file additional criminal charges.
