It put Britain at odds with US President Mr Trump.

He sanctioned ICC officials and condemned its “illegitimate and baseless” probes into the US and allies, including Israel.

The ICC has an arrest warrant out for Israel’s PM, Benjamin Netanyahu, for alleged war crimes in Gaza.

Mr Trump met him in Washington two days ago.

Yesterday, a spokesperson for Sir Keir stated that the UK stands behind the ICC’s “independence.” Additionally, the UK is part of a coalition of 79 countries that have come together to release a collective statement in support of the ICC.

Trump has condemned it as a “kangaroo court” and sanctioned Khan’s predecessor Fatou Bensouda in 2020.

The ICC said it stood by its personnel.

Germany’s Olaf Scholz said his sanctions jeopardised a body set up to “ensure dictators cannot persecute people and start wars”.
