Thirty years after Susan Smith drove her car into a lake with her two sons still strapped in their car seats, she recently applied for parole. Unfortunately, her plea was rejected by the parole board. It was later disclosed by a boyfriend that Smith had aspirations of being a contestant on the popular show “Dancing with the Stars.” Following the denial of her parole request, Smith is said to be deeply upset.
After finishing high school, Susan Leigh Vaughan tied the knot with David Smith. The couple had two sons, but their relationship started to deteriorate over time, despite the presence of their children. They went through several separations. During one of their breaks, Susan began seeing Tom Findlay, the lone heir to a wealthy mill owner. Smith envisioned a future together with Findlay until she received a letter from him, expressing his lack of desire for an instant family.
On the evening of October 25, Susan Smith appeared distressed as she knocked on a door near John D. Long Lake. Frantic, she implored the man who opened the door to contact the authorities. Smith claimed that a Black man armed with a weapon had stolen her car at a red light, with her two sons—3-year-old Michael and 14-month-old Alex—still inside the vehicle. In the following days, Smith recounted various inconsistent versions of the alleged carjacking.
Eventually, Smith confessed. There had been no carjacker. Feeling desperate, alone, and suicidal, she had taken her sons for a drive. At John D. Long Lake, she put the car in neutral, jumped out, and watched as the car sank. Scuba divers later found the vehicle with the boys still strapped in their seats.
