Florida sheriffs were involved in a traffic stop shooting of a Georgia man wanted for child sex crimes.
A news report from Fox5 stated that Matthew Steven Rollie, aged 30, was being sought by the authorities in Forsyth County for allegations of sexual offenses against a minor. A warrant had been issued by the county for Rollie’s apprehension.
The DeSoto County Sheriff’s Office learned that Rollie was in their area and actively began a search.
On Saturday, shortly after 2 a.m., officers spotted a vehicle that they believed was associated with Rollie.
During a confrontation with law enforcement, when officers were trying to ascertain the identity of a passenger, the individual drew a firearm and opened fire on them. Reports from WINK News indicated that one officer sustained multiple gunshot wounds during the incident.
One officer returned fire, killing the passenger, who was identified as Rollie.
The injured officer is receiving medical treatment and is expected to recover.
An investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is underway due to the officer-involved shooting.
