Teen Girl Faces Choice of Waiting for Rich Granddad’s $7M Inheritance or Coming Out Immediately

When a man’s niece told her she wanted to come out to the whole world, he suggested she wait for her wealthy grandfather to pass away to get her share of the inheritance. At that point, he wasn’t prepared to face the damaging consequences of his suggestion.

A 42-year-old man took to Reddit’s AITA sub while keeping his identity under wraps. He revealed that his seventeen-year-old niece shared her secret with him, hoping he would support her.

When she confessed she was not straight, the man told her he was there for her and that she could trust him. However, things took a different turn when she expressed her wish to come out to the whole world. He revealed:

“I let her know she should absolutely wait for her grandparents (my parents) to pass.”

THE ADVICE

OP (Original Poster) suggested she wait for his father to die because he knew about his terms of inheritance. OP’s father had made it clear that family members who declare they are not straight wouldn’t get their share of the estate.

HIS WIFE’S REACTION

When the man asked his niece not to come out of the closet, he hadn’t thought about his wife’s reaction. She was against his decision because she didn’t want the girl to hide her true identity to appease her grandfather. OP argued:

“I feel like her life quality will be much better with 7 million dollars at the cost of 1-2 years in the closet at tops.”

After seeing his wife’s reaction, the man felt he might have done something wrong. To seek advice from strangers on the internet, OP wrote about the incident in a Reddit post, saying he had seen his father’s will and was sure his niece would receive seven million dollars.

A Redditor said OP was not at fault for advising the girl to hide her sexuality because he was “looking out for the best interests of his niece.” Meanwhile, Redditor cabbage9988 said:

“NTA. You’re just advising her, not forcing her. She still gets to choose.”

Redditor Starlighter18 agreed that hiding one’s true identity is “sad” but felt OP was not at fault. The user said OP’s niece didn’t have to risk millions of dollars by revealing her sexuality and could wait until her grandparents died.

THE GIRL’S DECISION

After hearing what her uncle said, the girl had the option to do whatever she liked. By what OP said in his post, it seemed like the girl preferred holding off her coming out. OP said:

“She was a little sad but was also appreciative since that is obviously a life-changing amount of money that will allow her to live luxuriously until she dies.”

The girl told her uncle about her coming out instead of her friends, siblings, or parents because she trusted him. She knew he would support him, and that’s what children look for before revealing they are not straight.
