A Shelby County, Tennessee, district attorney is seeking to transfer a teenage suspect’s murder and rape trial to adult court.
During July 2024, 19-year-old Aaliyah Kyles was a victim of a heinous crime at her residence on 3901 Bald Eagle Drive, as reported by the Shelby County District Attorney’s Office.
According to WREG, neighbors became aware of a commotion and gunfire during that particular month. Witnesses observed a man clothed in black exiting the premises. Law enforcement officers later discovered Kyles unclothed in her bathtub, having sustained gunshot injuries.
When police arrested the suspect, he allegedly admitted to shooting and sexually assaulting Kyles.
On Friday, District Attorney Steve Mulroy emphasized the significance of a prosecutor’s decision in seeking the transfer of a juvenile to be tried in adult court.
“The differences between juvenile and adult consequences for the same crimes can be vast,” he said.
He added, “That said, the victim, Aaliyah Kyles, was a teenager too with a promising life ahead of her. The suspect admitted to breaking into her apartment, sexually assaulting her, and fatally shooting her. Seeking justice for Aaliyah and her family warrants this request.”
Meanwhile, a GoFundMe fundraiser has been set up to help the family with expenses.
