Father, 2 toddlers struck while on bike at same Lakewood intersection where former 3News reporter Bill Safos was killed

The individual who passed away in December was Safos who was struck at the intersection of Madison Avenue and Hilliard Road. In a separate incident that occurred on Monday, officials confirmed that the collision did not cause any life-threatening harm.

LAKEWOOD, Ohio — A father and his two young children were injured Monday morning after being struck by a car at a Lakewood intersection.

Reports indicate that a man was riding a bike with two young children aged 1 and 3 at the intersection when they were hit. This location is the same place where the former 3News journalist Bill Safos was fatally injured while crossing the street last year.

Fortunately, unlike the tragic outcome of Safos’ accident, the collision on Monday did not result in severe injuries, with all individuals involved being transported to the hospital for evaluation. Nevertheless, this event adds to a series of incidents at the problematic five-way intersection that local residents have expressed concerns about for a long time.

“We live close to that intersection and there’s the park right there,” said Stephanie Gillies, who won’t let her kids play at Wagar Park because of what she describes as the speeding cars. “Just because of that intersection alone, I will not let them cross by themselves.”

Police say a speeding car hit Safos back on Dec. 11, and alleged driver Zachary Saliba has been charged with aggravated vehicular homicide. Police would not say if the car that hit the bicyclist and his children was also going to fast on Monday.

Since Safos’ death, members of the community have attended city council meetings demanding for change, and petition on change.org is gaining momentum. Lakewood is a walking community, and Gilles agrees the intersection needs legislators’ attention.

“Definitely something needs to be done if this is going to keep happening,” she told 3News. “It’s already a dangerous intersection.”

Monday’s collision remains under investigation, with officials stressing the driver of the car that hit the bike remained on the scene.
