Beack Park crime: Ricardo Carcamo-Ortega of Waukegan arrested after cutting person with box cutter, threatened child: sheriff

PALATINE, Ill. (WLS) — A man has been charged with murdering his girlfriend in the north suburbs, police said.

Palatine police said officers responded to the 1700-block of North Hicks Road just before 11:30 p.m. on Nov. 29 for a well-being check.

When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered Fatima Lizeth Escalante Matamoros, aged 42, who had sustained a single gunshot wound to her head. She was swiftly taken to a nearby hospital by the Palatine Fire Department, but unfortunately, she was later pronounced dead.

Following the incident, the Palatine Police Department quickly identified Escalante Matamoros’ partner, Sergio E. Velasquez Fuentes, aged 43, as a person they wanted to question regarding the matter.

Velasquez Fuentes fled the scene before officers arrived, but Streamwood police found him the following morning.

Although Velasquez Fuentes was released from police custody in Palatine on December 2 without any charges as the investigation continued, he still remained someone the authorities were keen to speak with about the shooting incident.

On Dec. 13, Palatine police obtained an arrest warrant for Velasquez Fuentes for first-degree murder and learned that he was in federal custody for an unrelated matter.

Palatine police detectives took Velasquez Fuentes into custody on Jan. 6. He was charged with first-degree murder.

Following a detention hearing on Tuesday, Velasquez Fuentes will remain in custody until his next scheduled court date on Jan. 29.
