An investigation is underway in Michigan after a 5-year-old boy reportedly died on Friday when the hyperbaric chamber he was in exploded.
A boy was inside a hyperbaric chamber in a medical facility in Troy when an explosion happened. Firefighters who arrived at the scene found the pressurized oxygen therapy device on fire and the boy deceased, as reported by The Detroit News.
Reports from Metro Detroit News mentioned that the boy’s mother was also present during the incident and sustained injuries from the explosion. Troy police stated that the fire was quickly contained, and the facility did not sustain significant damage, according to KDIV.
Hyperbaric chambers, although uncommonly involved in explosions, contain pure oxygen at a concentration of 100%, which is three times more than what a standard room has. This makes the environment inside these chambers highly combustible, as explained by Troy police.
Officials have not confirmed the cause of Friday’s explosion as the incident remains under investigation.
