At least 10 people were killed early Wednesday in Louisiana when a car drove into a large crowd amid New Year celebrations.
The Advocate reported that the mass casualty incident occurred at 4 a.m. near the intersection of Bourbon Street and Canal Street in New Orleans.
“This man was trying to run over as many people as he possibly could,” New Orleans police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick said.
An unidentified individual reportedly shot two police officers following a car crash. Despite the recovery of an improvised explosive device at the scene, the FBI clarified that the incident was not linked to terrorism.
According to WWL, approximately 36 individuals were taken to the hospital. The current status of their conditions remains unknown. Officials have confirmed that the two officers are in stable condition.
Local bars and hotels were evacuated following the incident. It is unclear whether a suspect is in custody.
