Sadly, there are a number of murder investigations taking place across Yorkshire each week and, thankfully, most of these get resolved.

However, there are always some which remain unsolved, sometimes for years. This year, the murders of Jamie Meah and Abdullah Hassan are two of these unsolved cases.

In both cases, the police launched murder investigations into their deaths, but no one was ever charged with the crime.

On March 31, Jamie Meah was travelling with another teenager in a taxi in Armley, Leeds. The pair were both attacked and stabbed in the taxi and while the other victim’s injuries were not life-threatening, Jamie Meah died of his injuries aged just 18.

At the time, Senior Investigating Officer, Detective Chief Inspector Lee Townley of the Homicide and Major Enquiry Team said: “Extensive enquiries are being carried out in relation to this murder investigation, our thoughts remain with the victim who has lost his life as a result of a violent attack on the streets of Leeds. We are working to establish the full circumstances surrounding this incident.

“What we do know is that the two males were in a taxi at the time when they were attacked by three suspects in another vehicle. I would appeal urgently to anyone who was in the area last night, who may have dashcam footage, or CCTV or mobile phone footage of anything suspicious to come forward.”

The police did release photos of four men they were searching for in connection with the murder, and said they believed the suspects had left the UK. The suspects were Aquade Jeffers, Caleb Awe, Enham Nishat, all aged 20, and Ranei Wilks, aged 22, all from Leeds.

Senior Investigating Officer Detective Chief Inspector Damian Roebuck said: “Jamie’s death was a tragedy in which a young man with his life ahead of him was needlessly cut short.

“We would like to speak to these four males in connection with our enquiry. These men are believed to have links to Leeds and the Liverpool area and enquiries are actively being carried out in those areas.”

“I would urge anyone who thinks they may have seen any of these four males, or knows of their whereabouts to please contact us with those details.”

On Easter Sunday this year (April 9, 2023), Abdullah Hassan was shot and killed in Gleadless Valley, Sheffield. Despite the efforts of paramedics, he died at the scene.

A post-mortem examination confirmed Abdullah died from a single gunshot, and his family released a tribute shortly after the murder. They said: “The passing of our son and brother has caused our entire family a very deep sadness and hurt. He was a massive pillar in our family and it is beyond painful to lose him in such tragic circumstances. There is only one way to describe him. He was one of a kind, inside and out..

“As a family, we kindly ask that we are given time to grieve this loss and we hope that justice will be secured for him swiftly.”

On April 17, South Yorkshire Police arrested five men in connection with the murder. However, no charges were ever brought and the investigation into the murder continues.

Detective Chief Inspector Phil Etheridge said: “Incidents of this nature understandably cause significant worry and concern among our communities, and we’ve had a number of specialist resources in the area since the early hours trying to piece together what happened.

“In the early stages of a murder investigation, enquiries progress at pace as we gather as much information as we can about the incident and who may be involved. Therefore, I want to take this opportunity to urge anyone out there who might know something to come forward.

“You can submit information anonymously via Crimestoppers, or directly to the investigation team via the Major Incident Public Portal (MIPP), as well as by calling 101 or speaking to an officer locally.”

You can call the police if you have any information on this murder on 101, quoting incident number 74 of 9 April 2023. You can also call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
