Albert Musalo and his wife, Joan Behrman, are enjoying retirement in Nevada.
They relocated near their daughter, Joanne Kohls, and her family, establishing themselves in the upscale Montreux neighborhood, which is a gated community located in a rural area south of Reno. Despite the neighborhood being known for its multi-million-dollar homes, the Musalos opted for one of the more modest residences on the block.
When Joanne Kohls tries to reach her parents via their landline, she receives no response. Concerned, she contacts the security at Montreux to inquire about her parents. The security guard informs her that he received no answer after knocking on their door. Joanne, along with her husband, then decides to personally go check on her parents. Upon unlocking the front door and calling out to them, they are met with silence.
As Joanne steps into the house, she is startled to see mud tracked throughout the entryway and dining room. Meanwhile, her husband heads towards the main bedroom only to make the grim discovery that Joan and Albert had been fatally shot while in bed.
Detectives from the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office quickly arrive at the scene. There are no signs of forced entry, and nothing of value appears to be missing. Montreux’s HOA fees cover an extensive security team. A guard staffs the neighborhood’s front gatehouse 24/7, 365 days a year, while a service entrance is manned 12 hours daily. All visitors must provide identification and receive homeowner approval for access. Even contract workers must obtain daily entrance passes.
Investigators initially suspect the Musalos were targeted, but no one can explain why.
