Five people aboard an American Airlines flight were hospitalized Sunday after the airline said the aircraft experienced “unexpected turbulence.”
According to an American Airlines spokesperson, Flight 1286 encountered turbulence while en route from Miami to Raleigh-Durham in North Carolina, as reported to Fox News Digital.
The Airbus A321 successfully landed at Raleigh-Durham International Airport close to 10:50 p.m. after the crew notified authorities of potential injuries to passengers and cabin crew caused by the turbulence, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) stated.
RDU Fire Rescue, in collaboration with rescue teams from Wake and Durham Counties, were on standby at the airport and swiftly attended to the flight’s arrival at approximately 11:30 p.m., transporting five individuals to a nearby hospital, as confirmed by an airport representative to Fox News Digital.
A passenger described seeing two flight attendants get injured, including one they said suffered a broken arm and another who was burned from hot water on the drinks cart. The passenger said a man was also knocked unconscious.

The FAA said it will investigate the incident.
