A remake of the 90s thriller favorite Single White Female is in the works, but there’s a key element absent…

The 90s cult classic Single White Female is getting a reboot, but fans are saying there is a problem over the title. 

The original 1992 psychological erotic thriller was a hit at the box office when it first came out, despite receiving mixed reviews. It featured Bridget Fonda and Jennifer Jason Leigh in leading roles.

Actress Jenna Ortega, known for her role in Wednesday, and Taylor Russell, who starred in Bones And All, are currently in discussions to star in and produce the remake of the movie, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

When the news broke, social media users were quick to share their opinions on the upcoming remake, with one person commenting, ‘Correction to the movie title: Single ‘Hispanic’ Female.’

Another shared, ‘Single Latina?’ while a fan added, ‘Just call it something else…lol but I’d love to see them both in a film for sure!’ 

‘They should rename it single female,’ one tweeted, and another typed, ‘A remake? I don’t think the world was asking for this, but okay.’

An X user also commented, ‘I didn’t know this was Disney,’ and one said, ‘I’m not sure how I feel about this. Remakes are hit or miss.’

‘You know you are free to create a new story about single female roommates without doing a reboot,’ another shared. 

One added, ‘This movie was a classic. I don’t wanna see a remake to be fair,’ and a fan wrote, ‘Just take the main themes of this film, obsession, impersonation and manipulation, and do something new with it. There’s no need to remake this movie.’

However, others shared their excitement over the reboot, with one penning, ‘So hyped for that reboot! Taylor and Jenna are gonna slay.’

‘YESSSS!!!! The movie is so good, they’d make it even better,’ another commented, while one added, ‘Love them both I will be seated.’

The upcoming remake – which Ortega and Russell are in negotiations for – will be made under Elizabeth Gabler’s 3000 Pictures. 

No other details about the project have been announced, including who could possibly direct.

Along with Jennifer Jason Leigh and Bridget Fonda, other stars that had been cast in the cult classic included Steven Weber and Peter Friedman. 

The premise followed: ‘A woman advertising for a new roommate finds that something very strange is going on with the tenant who decides to move in,’ per IMDB.  

Over a decade later, a 2005 sequel was released titled Single White Female 2: The Psycho and was direct to video. 

The movie cast Kristen Miller, Allison Lange, Brooke Burns, Todd Babcock and also Francois Giroday. 

The Roommate (2011) which starred Leighton Meester and Minka Kelly also had a similar storyline to the cult classic. 

While talking to Interview Magazine back in 2015, Jennifer Jason Leigh – who played antagonist Hedra in the 1992 film – opened up about playing that kind of character. 

‘I certainly enjoy playing those types of people. They’re easier to play in a way, because they’re farther away from who you are, but you can tap into things you would never act out on in your own life, or never expose to everyone,’ she stated.

‘They’re the things nightmares and dreams are made of, but they’re not anywhere you would actually want to go or dwell in.

The Weeds actress added, ‘It’s fun to do that in a really safe, creative way, and probably really healthy, I think.’

While talking to Interview Magazine back in 2015, Jennifer Jason Leigh – who played antagonist Hedra in the 1992 film – opened up about playing that kind of character; seen in 2023 in L.A. 

Bridget Fonda – who is the daughter of Easy Rider actor Peter Fonda – had also reflected on taking on a leading role in the movie. 

During a past interview with Cinema Showcase at the time of the movie’s promotion, she opened up about her role. 

‘It was kind of hard, it was scary. It was a tough summer emotionally. I went through a lot on the movie, as much as I was excited to get it out of myself, it’s just you’re exorcising some fears and things at the same time. 

‘You sort of just get drained – emotionally drained. So, yes, because of that it was hard. But to understand it, I felt I had a pretty good idea of what the character would be,’ the star added.
