A woman from Texas was taken into custody last Wednesday following the discovery by Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) troopers of 25 undocumented immigrants packed into the rear of a box truck, concealed behind mattresses and in a hidden compartment.
The DPS reported that Silvia Patricia Santamaria, a 43-year-old resident of Houston, was apprehended and accused of 25 counts of smuggling people, and has subsequently been placed in the Live Oak County Jail.
Shortly past 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, an individual alerted a DPS trooper at a truck stop on Interstate 37 in George West, Texas, about a minor accident that had occurred in the parking area.
When the trooper contacted the driver of a white 2005 International box truck involved in the crash, later identified as Santamaria, she allegedly told the law enforcement official she was driving to Houston after picking up mattresses in Alton, Texas.
