CHICAGO (WLS) — A local mountain climber has died while trying to reach the top of a peak in the Himalayas.
Alex Pancoe, who is a cancer survivor, was in the middle of a climb raising funds for pediatric brain tumor research at Lurie Children’s Hospital.

Having battled cancer himself, Pancoe found inspiration to conquer the highest peaks on all continents, a challenge known as the “Explorer’s Grand Slam.”
The Northwestern University graduate was tackling the fifth-highest peak in the world, in the Himalayas, when he lost his life.
In support of pediatric brain tumor research, Alex’s endeavors resulted in raising over $1 million. As a token of appreciation for his contributions, a section of the hospital was dedicated and named The Pancoe Family Foundation Care Team Station.
Nina Laski Pancoe, Pancoe’s wife, took to Instagram to convey a heartfelt message, expressing, “You passed away engaged in an activity and a place dear to your heart. Your legacy will endure, ensuring that your remarkable essence is remembered by all.”
Lurie Children’s Hospital sent its deepest sympathies to Pancoe’s family, with staff saying they are profoundly grateful for the impact he made on so many lives.
