US citizen imprisoned in Russia given new 15-year sentence in wake of espionage conviction

A Russian-born U.S. citizen who was already behind bars in Russia on a bribery conviction has been handed a second sentence for espionage.

Russian news agencies reported that Eugene Spector was given a new 15-year prison sentence for his conviction on espionage charges. Born and raised in Leningrad, Russia, Spector later relocated to the United States, where he acquired citizenship.

In August of the previous year, a Moscow court accused Spector of espionage, although specifics regarding the case were not disclosed to the public.

The aide, Anastasia Alekseyeva, was sentenced to 12 years in April for accepting bribes of two expensive overseas vacation trips.

Arkady Dvorkovich served as a deputy prime minister during Dmitry Medvedev’s tenure as Russian Prime Minister from 2012 to 2018. Currently, Dvorkovich holds the position of President of the international chess federation FIDE.
