Amid the rumors that Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande will be opening the Oscars with a Wicked musical number, Jenna Bush Hager pressed Saturday Night Live star Ana Gasteyer about what fans should expect to see at the SNL 50th anniversary celebration.
Bush Hager aired an Access Hollywood interview with Erivo where the actress ran away from the interviewer after he asked if the rumors were true. “I’m not doing this, goodbye!” she says in the video as she runs away.
“But if she says, ‘I’m not doing this,’ that means something’s happening,” Bush Hager noted. She then asked Gasteyer if she is “good at keeping secrets.”
“Terrible, terrible. I just get excited,” Gasteyer replied.
“Oh good,” Bush Hager replied. “So Saturday Night Live 50th, what’s happening?”
Gasteyer immediately sprung into action and mimicked Erivo, responding, “I’m not doing this! I’m not doing this.” She then got up from her seat and proceeded to run away from Bush Hager as the Today host continued to question her.
“No, what’s happening? Come on, I heard you’re in it!” Bush Hager continued as she chased her to the side of the set.
“I’m not doing this!” Gasteyer repeated.
They eventually returned to their seats where Gasteyer, who was an SNL cast member from 1996 to 2002, responded more candidly about how she’s prepared for the 50th anniversary show.
“The show is characteristically created all within that weekend, so as much as there are things that we kind of know of in advance — we know that there’s an event, save the date,” she said. The SNL alum added that she’s currently “looking forward” to reuniting with her “old friends” from the show.
The hosts were later joined on the show by Girls 5eva star and former SNL writer Paula Pell, who did reveal some major news about the anniversary. She hinted that fans may get to see a new “Debby Downer” sketch, and Will Ferrell and Gasteyer may reprise their roles as their infamous Marty and Bobbi Mohan duo.
Gasteyer is the latest Saturday Night Live star to join Bush Hager on the show as a guest host. Next up this week, Mikey Day, Chloe Fineman and Cheri Oteri will be guest hosting Today With Jenna & Friends.
Today with Jenna & Friends airs on weekdays at 10/9c on NBC.
