Alex Murdaugh lawyers file appeal alleging ousted South Carolina court clerk swayed jury

Lawyers representing Alex Murdaugh, a former lawyer now convicted felon, have submitted an appeal for his sentence. They claim that improper testimony and accusations of jury tampering by court clerk Becky Hill tainted the fairness of the trial.

Murdaugh, aged 56, is currently serving a life sentence for the murder of his wife, Maggie, and their youngest son, Paul, in June 2021 at their hunting estate in Colleton County, South Carolina. The prosecution contended that these murders were committed to divert attention from Murdaugh’s financial crimes, which were coming to light at the time.

In April, the discredited legal figure received an additional 40 years behind bars on top of his life sentences. This extended sentence was for charges including conspiracy to commit wire and bank fraud, bank fraud, multiple counts of wire fraud, planning wire fraud, and numerous money laundering charges.

Hill, who is accused of 76 ethics violations, was expected to face the State’s Ethics Commission on Dec. 19. But that hearing is on hold in light of a pending criminal investigation by the Attorney General’s Office, the State newspaper reported.

The appeal also alleges that prosecutors introduced multiple guns as evidence that had no evidence linking them to the murders, and that gunshot residue on a raincoat shown as evidence in court were not linked to their client by any evidence.
