It’s a heartbreaking “game over” for Mythic Quest fans as Apple TV+ has canceled the show after four seasons.
The series “Mythic Quest” will not be returning for a fifth season, as announced by the show’s executive producers, Megan Ganz, David Hornsby, and Rob McElhenney on Friday. However, there is good news for fans as Apple TV+ has approved the release of a re-edited version of the Season 4 finale, set to debut on the streaming platform in mid-April.
The creators expressed their gratitude to the fans and Apple TV+ for their support over the past five years and assured that the new version of the Season 4 finale will now serve as the series finale, providing closure for viewers. The original finale left off with a long-awaited kiss between Poppy (played by Charlotte Nicdao) and Ian (played by McElhenney), the co-leads of the show’s fictional company, MQ.
Reflecting on the show’s conclusion, Ganz, Hornsby, and McElhenney stated, “Endings are difficult, but after four amazing seasons, ‘Mythic Quest’ is reaching its conclusion. We take immense pride in the show and the universe we created and express sincere appreciation to every individual in the cast and crew who contributed their passion. To all our dedicated fans, we extend our heartfelt thanks for being part of this journey with us.”
The trio continued, “To our partners at Apple, thank you for believing in the vision from the very beginning. Because endings are hard, with Apple’s blessing, we made one final update to our last episode—so we could say goodbye, instead of just game over.”
When Decider sat down with Nicdao in March to discuss the Season 4 finale, she indicated that they had shot at least two versions of Poppy and Ian’s ending — one of which ended with the jaw-dropping kiss between the pair — and another that goes past that moment. It’s unclear if the unaired footage will be part of the newly edited series finale.
“What I think is really fun is we actually shot about a page more than what you see in the finale, of the moments right after the kiss happens. That was honestly partly to inform those moments of reaction that you get from Ian and Poppy right after the kiss,” she said.
Mythic Quest originally debuted on Apple TV+ in 2020 and began airing its fourth and final season in January. The show also stars Danny Pudi, Jessie Ennis, Ashly Burch, and Imani Hakim.
All of Mythic Quest is currently streaming on Apple TV+.
