According to reports, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has selected three potential candidates to succeed him in the event of his assassination or death due to an Israeli attack. However, notably missing from this list is his own son.
Hiding out in a bunker, the despot has little contact with the outside world, very similar to how Osama Bin Laden’s final days played out.
To mitigate the risk of assassination, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has opted to communicate primarily with his commanders through a trusted aide. This includes the suspension of electronic communications to increase the difficulty of locating him, as disclosed by three Iranian officials familiar with his contingency plans for wartime emergencies.
Secluded in a bunker, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has identified a succession plan within his military hierarchy to address the potential loss of key members of his leadership circle. This strategic move aims to ensure continuity in the event of any unforeseen circumstances.
And in a remarkable move, the officials add, Ayatollah Khamenei has even named three senior clerics as candidates to succeed him should he be killed, as well — perhaps the most telling illustration of the precarious moment he and his three-decade rule are facing.
It’s not surprising that he’s a little nervous, considering Israel has wiped out a virtual planeload of top leaders and military commanders and the U.S. is considering getting involved in the conflict.
