The previous South Carolina court clerk who presided over the 2023 Alex Murdaugh murder trial has been released from jail after meeting the bond requirements on Wednesday. She was arrested for suspected misconduct during the trial.
On Wednesday afternoon, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division disclosed that Hill, aged 57, is facing charges of obstructing justice and misconduct in Colleton County, as well as perjury in Richland County.
She received a $30,000 bond in Colleton County and a $50,000 bond in Richland County.
The accusations originate from a hearing in January 2024 at the South Carolina Supreme Court. During this hearing, Justice Jean Toal concluded that there was no need for a new trial for Murdaugh. He had been found guilty of the murders of his wife, Maggie, and son, Paul, in June 2021 on his family’s hunting grounds. Murdaugh had requested a new trial citing claims of jury tampering related to Hill, which his defense team argued justified a retrial.
Her former attorney, Justin Bamberg, who has represented victims of Murdaugh’s financial crimes, said at a March news conference that Hill’s decision had nothing to do with any pending investigations involving the clerk.
