Cobra Kai never fails to keep us guessing. The final five episodes of the beloved action comedy provided fans with countless surprises as the Valley’s long-running youth karate war finally reached its thrilling crescendo.
Season 6, Part 3 once again delivered a medley of exhilarating fight scenes, but Cobra Kai is at its best when it balances the action with comedy.
Enter Chozen Toguchi. Who would have thought that the character who challenged Daniel LaRusso to a fight to the death in Karate Kid II would have such strong comedic chops? In Season 6, Episode 12 (“Rattled”), Chozen learns that his romantic feelings for Kumiko aren’t reciprocated. He plans to mend his broken heart by watching a Storage Wars marathon, — which is honestly very relatable — but Daniel and Amanda instead decide to take him on their wine-tasting trip where they set him up on a blind date with Moon’s mom, Winnie Taylor.
Moon, a self-professed pacifist, is a free spirit, so who did Cobra Kai cast to portray her mother? Former Saved by the Bell star Elizabeth Berkley!
“Moon’s such a colorful character that our minds ran wild in terms of who her mom is and what her vibe is,” Cobra Kai co-creator Hayden Schlossberg told Decider during a February Zoom interview. “She has to be a little more Moon than Moon. We put together our dream list of guest stars we could reach out to, and Elizabeth was at the top of that list.”
It turns out that Berkley is a fan of the show and was flattered to join the Cobra Kai family. Celebrities really are just like us!
The Chozen/Winnie pairing added some much-needed levity to the season as the duo bickered about Reiki, crystal healings, and tarot cards before eventually bonding over their mutual love of “trash reality TV,” specifically Storage Wars.
“It was one of the most fun days that we ever had on the show,” Schlossberg continued. She was lovely. She got to experience this really fun energy where we weren’t full of anxiety trying to film 900 karate fights for one moment.”
The actor had what Schlossberg called the “full Cobra Kai” experience. Not only was William Zabka directing the episode, but it also just so happened to be Ralph Macchio’s last day on set in Atlanta.
“At the end of the day, she’s like, ‘I feel like I’ve been here for three weeks. It’s such a full experience.’”
We know that Chozen’s heart belongs to another, but we can’t help but ship this wacky, reality TV lovin’ duo.
