Will Certifying Trump Victory Elevate Kamala Harris to Democrat Party Martyrdom?

As it does every year, January 6 has rolled around again. For Democrats, it is a national day of mourning. If they could pull it off, they would undoubtedly demand that all flags be flown at half-staff. For Republicans, it marks a day where those same Democrats, who drone on about “democracy!” no longer felt the need to hide what they really thought about that democracy, and with the presidency of Joe Biden, proceeded to weaponize the federal government against it. This January 6 marks something that has only happened a few times, but it could have very different results.

Today, Vice President Kamala Harris, per her Constitutional duty, certified the election of her opponent in the presidential race, Donald Trump, as the 47th President of the United States. It is something that has only happened twice in modern history: Richard Nixon certified the victory of John F. Kennedy in 1961, and Al Gore did it after George W. Bush won the presidency in 2000. While granted, it must be a horribly awkward situation for anyone, but for Kamala Harris, could it wind up making her a sympathetic martyr figure for the Democrat party and saving her political career?

Currently, very few Democrats can define who and what their party is. There are a few— James Carville and former presidential candidate and Minnesota Rep. Dean Phillips, for instance—who have taken a look in the mirror and have been brutally honest about what they see. But there is no evidence that anyone in the party will actually listen to them. They have an astoundingly shallow bench for 2028. Proof of that is that a December McLaughlin poll of possible 2028 Democrat presidential hopefuls had Harris at the top of the list with a 23-point lead at 35 percent over second on the list, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, who garnered just 12 percent. Anyone else mentioned is in single digits. Often mentioned as a possible contender, California Gov. Gavin Newsom was third at seven percent. But a 2028 run is just one option for Harris. She has also been mentioned as a possible gubernatorial candidate in California, something that would take little work on her part.

One of the things that Americans made very clear in 2024 was that they are done with identity politics. They want a return to meritocracy and the idea that may the best man, or woman win. But Democrats heard none of it. They will continue to be obsessed with race, gender, and anything else that divides Americans into groups, and the more “oppressed” those groups are, the better. Kamala Harris checks off all the oppression Olympics boxes, and for Democrats, that is an automatic ascent into martyrdom.

My colleague Bob Hoge had brought up an interesting possibility. What if Harris had skipped the certification? It has happened before. In 1969, Vice President Hubert Humphrey was absent at the certification of Richard Nixon’s second term. Of course, anything is possible, but the one thing today’s Democrats love is victimhood. Just the sight of poor Kamala Harris being forced to certify the election of the “evil” Donald Trump gives her ultimate victimhood status and makes any blame she has taken for their resounding loss evaporate and launch her even further into the martyr stratosphere.

Kamala Harris posted a video to X on Monday, blathering on about her “sacred obligation” and her “love of country, loyalty to our Constitution, and my unwavering faith in the American people.” Trump responded on Truth Social, saying, “CONGRESS CERTIFIES OUR GREAT ELECTION VICTORY TODAY — A BIG MOMENT IN HISTORY. MAGA!” He also posted an image of the peaceful gathering at the Capitol on January 6, 2021.

With little political theatre from Democrats, Donald Trump’s victory was certified on Monday, and it just might make Kamala Harris the Democrats’ very own comeback kid.
