ABC’s David Muir Gets Roasted For ‘Playing Dress Up’ While Covering Deadly LA Fires

Last Updated on January 11, 2025

ABC correspondent David Muir is being roasted across the internet after his vanity was on full display while reporting on air on the deadly Los Angeles wildfires.

The host of “World News Tonight” was seen wearing clothespins at the back of his flame retardant jacket to make it fit tighter while reporting live from areas in Southern California.

Muir moderated ABC’s Sept. 10 presidential debate between former President Donald Trump and now out-going Vice President Kamala Harris.

Most analysts recognized that Muir and Davis engaged in partisan fact checking against the Trump campaign.

Back in June, ABC’s David Muir “fact checked” Trump and said crime was going down. As it turns out the revised data now shows ABC was wrong.

The FBI quietly updated their crime data for 2022. Their new report showed that their data was missing thousands of crimes.

The updated data shows there were 80,029 more violent crimes than in 2021.

There were an additional 1,699 m*rders, 7,780 r*pes, 33,459 robberies, and 37,091 aggravated assaults.

And now Muir is under fire for his blatant vanity in the face of tragedy while thousands of acres in highly populated Los Angeles county burn.

ABC News anchor David Muir faced criticism on social media for his actions. He was called a ‘narcissist a**hole,’ and the New York Post reported that ABC News insiders were also embarrassed by what was seen as a ‘tone-deaf’ fashion mistake.

An insider source explained that the clothespins were not a fashion statement, but a practical solution to keep Muir’s coat from flapping in the wind during his live broadcast.

The source told Mediatie, “This was 30 seconds before air, a producer stepped in to try to fix (his) coat in the wind. This had nothing to do with David Muir asking for anything.”

The explanations didn’t help Muir’s reputation, however.

“Nice jacket bro. Glad you look nice and svelte with those clothes line pegs, while our city burns to the ground,”

“ABC insiders” are “embarrassed and horrified’ over David Muir’s alleged ‘narcissistic’ fashion move while covering LA wildfires,” Page Six reports:

Multiple insiders pointed to Muir’s Instagram account, which features the physically fit newsman regularly broodily mugging in form-fitting T-shirts with extra-short sleeves that show off his physique. But sources also told us that the fashion-world move of cinching a jacket is par for the course for one of ABC’s leading me.”

Clamping the back of (often borrowed) clothes for a more tailored silhouette isn’t unusual in broadcast TV..

Viewers, however, aren’t supposed to know or see the slick wardrobe fix that’s also popular in menswear shoots and on store mannequins. But Muir turned during his live shot to show viewers the remains of a scorched building behind him, and unfortunately for him, also gave a glimpse of his cinched jacket.

One insider mentioned the irony of “trying to look ‘hot’ during a fire … It’s outrageous,” they said.

“[Covering the fires] shouldn’t be about vanity. It should be about people losing their homes,” the second source said.

Donald Trump, Jr. took to X to savage Muir:

“David Muir, the supposed moderator of my father‘s presidential debate, who instead chose to be a participant, is so vain that as people in Los Angeles are losing everything, he used clothes pins to make his fake fireman’s jacket more form fitting. Sick!”

David MuirJuanita Broderick even chimed in, saying, “He’s so vain.”

Greg Dutra, an Emmy-winning meteorologist at an ABC affiliate in Chicago took to Zuckerberg’s instagram to defend Muir after people online roasted him for using a clothespin to make his coat fit his frame better.

The veteran weatherman posted a photo to Instagram Friday taken from behind him in the middle of a live shot.

His coat is also cinched by a clothespin — a move he says is pretty standard when reporting the weather.

Former Fox News host Megyn Kelly blasted Muir for “pretending to be a fireman” while reporting from the scene.

“The abject vanity of this man,” Kelly said during Thursday’s episode of her SiriusXM podcast “The Megyn Kelly Show.”

“This is not dress-up time. That’s something that my little boys did when they were still in the single digits…not on the news when people are dying.”

ABC News is also under fire after the network agreed to pay President-elect Donald Trump $16 million to settle a defamation lawsuit.

The defamation came from the ABC’s star anchor George Stephanopoulos back on March 10, on the Sunday show “This Week,” when he repeatedly insisted Trump had been “found liable for rape.”

ABC agreed to pay $15 million toward Trump’s future presidential library, plus $1 million for his lawyers’ fees, to get out of a defamation lawsuit.
