**Spoilers for Outlander Season 7 Episode 15 “Written in My Own Heart’s Blood,” now streaming on Starz**
Does Claire die at the end of Outlander Season 7 Episode 15 “Written in My Own Heart’s Blood”?
The latest episode of Outlander presents a tense situation for the protagonist as she battles for survival. The storyline includes poignant flashbacks where the characters, Jamie and Claire, express their love while Claire harbors concerns about the impending battle, sensing a distinct danger looming over them. Surprisingly, Jamie emerges from the battle unharmed, while it is Claire who suffers a gunshot wound while tending to wounded soldiers in a makeshift hospital.
Claire’s gunshot wound, located in her abdomen, is portrayed as a severe and potentially fatal injury, even by today’s medical standards. The period setting of 1778 further complicates her chances of survival, with the official army surgeon deeming her condition as hopeless. Claire’s fate rests in the hands of Dr. Denzell Hunter, a compassionate Quaker physician whom she has been guiding in modern medical practices throughout the season. The responsibility of saving Claire is entrusted to Dr. Hunter by Jamie, showcasing the high stakes involved in her treatment.
Can Denzell save Claire? Will Claire die in Outlander Season 7? Here’s everything we know about Claire’s fate…
So is Claire doomed? Is this the end of Claire and Jamie’s epic romance? Or can Denzell somehow save the day?
“It’s such a huge moment for Denzell,” Joey Phillips told Decider, explaining that Claire has been “a touchstone” for the young doctor throughout the season. “Now everything rests on you and you are now the only option left. You know, the doctors have fled. Jamie is begging me to save her life. It’s such a huge thing for him.”
While we won’t find out whether or not Denzell’s efforts will be enough to save Claire until the Outlander Season 7 finale premieres on Friday, January 17, Phillips teased what his character’s strategy will be in the ensuing surgery to come.
“I think he has to just try and remain calm and try and detach himself and be the surgeon and know that he’s capable and he will do everything he can,” Phillips said. “But at the end of the day, it’s Claire that’s on the table, and that is so emotional.”
“For me, as the actor, I was emotional seeing Caitriona laid there and all I wanted to do was whatever I could to make sure that she was okay. I knew that I was going to try my best. And that was like Denzell and Joey sort of merging together.”
Still, you might be wondering: Is Claire going to die? Big book spoilers incoming…
In Diana Gabaldon’s book, Written in My Own Heart’s Blood, Claire is shot at the Battle of Monmouth and it’s up to Dr. Denzell Hunter to save her. In the book, Denzell succeeds and Claire eventually recovers. So Claire lives!
Does that mean that’s what’s going to happen in the Starz series, though? Well, considering that Caitriona Balfe was on the set of Outlander Season 8, we think it’s highly likely Claire pulls through.
