LOS ANGELES — The renowned minds behind the beloved show “Will and Grace,” David Kohan and Max Mutchnick, have continued a special custom for three decades. This tradition has now found its way onto the production set of their latest comedy series, “Mid-Century Modern.”
The show tells the story of three long-time gay friends, portrayed by Matt Bomer, Nathan Lane, and Nathan Lee Graham, who opt to live together in Palm Springs. They embrace their golden years as a chosen family, offering each other support and companionship through life’s ups and downs.
To commemorate shooting the “very very last scene of a show,” Kohan and Mutchnick reveal their 30-year-old ritual. The term ‘martini shot’ refers to the final shot of the day, after which the cast and crew typically share a drink together. At the conclusion of each season of their television series, they uphold this Hollywood custom with a unique twist.
The secret was revealed during an interview on the red carpet at the “Mid-Century Modern” premiere. Their assistants bring them a coffee mug full of vodka. They casually blow on the mug as if it’s a hot cup of coffee, playfully maintaining the charade while sipping their vodka in a moment of well-earned celebration.
This vodka-in-a-coffee-mug ritual has captured the duo’s creative process while honoring their comedic legacy.
All 10 episodes of “Mid-Century Modern” are streaming now on Hulu.
The Walt Disney Company is the parent company of Hulu and this ABC station.
