The U.S. President, Donald Trump, recently revealed a new plan to introduce what he calls a “gold card,” which is essentially his version of the traditional green card but at a much higher price point of $5 million.
“In addition to the current green card option, we will now offer a gold card for $5 million. This upgraded card will grant the same privileges as a green card, with the added benefit of serving as a pathway to citizenship. Wealthy individuals will have the opportunity to enter the country by purchasing this exclusive gold card,” stated Trump during a meeting at the Oval Office.
“Those who acquire this gold card are expected to be affluent, successful, contribute significantly through taxes, create job opportunities, and stimulate economic growth. We anticipate this initiative to be highly successful as it is a groundbreaking approach,” Trump further elaborated on the new proposal.
Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick suggested the program would begin in two weeks and replace the existing EB-5 immigrant investor program. He said the immigrants would be vetted and help to reduce the budget deficit.
Trump said he expects companies will pay to get educated workers into the U.S. with gold cards and that the country could sell one million cards. The president said the card would be a path to citizenship, but people would not be buying access to citizenship.
