In a press conference on Tuesday, Adams talked about how the border crisis is negatively affecting New York City. This problem has been ongoing for the past three years because the Biden administration has not taken any action to address the issue at the southern border.
He suggested that he planned to work with Tom Homan, who Trump recently nominated to become his new border czar.
“Those who are here committing crimes, robberies, shooting at police officers, raping innocent people, have been a harm to our country, I want to sit down and hear the plan on how we’re going to address them,” Adams said. “Those are the people I am talking about, and I would love to sit down with the border czar to hear his thoughts on how we’re going to address those who are harming our citizens.”
A reporter asked about Adams’ stance on Trump’s plan to carry out mass deportations after taking office. The mayor brought up how previous Democratic presidents handled illegal immigration.
“I want you to all go back and Google Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama. Google what they said about those who commit crimes in our city and what they said in our country,” Adams responded. “They said, ‘Those who commit crimes need to get out right away.’ That was their position.”
The mayor went on to challenge those who might seek to cancel him for his willingness to work with the incoming Trump administration.
“This is not a new position because in the era of cancel culture, no one’s afraid to be honest about the truth. Well, cancel me, because I’m going to protect the people of the city. If you come into this country, in this city, and think you’re going to harm innocent New Yorkers and innocent migrants and asylum seekers, this is not the mayor you want to be in the city under.”

Strong words coming from a Democrat who happens to run one of the bluest cities in the nation, right? Given how the crisis has impacted his city, it is not surprising. Perhaps this is one of the reasons why Adams has made overtures to the incoming president, even going so far as to defend him when the shrill harpies on “The View” asked whether he believed Trump is a fascist.
He broke with his party Saturday and said it’s simply gone too far. “My answer is no,” he said when asked if the GOP nominee is a fascist.
Mr. Adams, mayor of America’s largest city and one of the country’s most prominent Black elected officials, was briefing reporters about security plans ahead of Mr. Trump’s rally Sunday at Madison Square Garden when he was asked if he believed the former president was a fascist.
“I have had those terms hurled at me by some political leaders in the city, using terms like Hitler and fascist,” said Mr. Adams, a former police officer. “My answer is no. I know what Hitler has done and I know what a fascist regime looks like.
“I think, as I have called for over and over again, that the level of conversation, I think we can all dial down the temperature [emphasis mine].”
Adams has been a vocal critic of the Biden administration, which has failed repeatedly to address the situation at the southern border. The crisis has driven many illegal immigrants and asylum seekers to the city, which has placed a huge strain on its resources.
In 2023, Adams traveled to Washington, D.C., to meet with members of the Biden administration about the problem. Long story short: It didn’t go well.
The mayor traveled to Washington, D.C., to solicit assistance from the White House and Congress as New York City grapples with handling the immigration problem. Adams has estimated that the issue will cost the city $12 billion over the next three years and was hoping to secure federal reimbursements for asylum-seeker care along with other assistance. Unfortunately for New York City, it appears that the Biden administration wasn’t exactly amenable to the idea.
Mayor Eric Adams painted a grim picture Friday of his trip to Washington, D.C., where he sought more financial help for the ongoing migrant crisis in New York City.
Adams met with Congressional leaders and members of the Biden administration on Thursday.
The mayor says Washington should help cover the cost of housing hundreds of thousands of migrants. However, he said he left the meetings “with the cold reality that help is not on the way.”
“We did not walk out from D.C. with any level of optimism that anything is going to drastically change,” Adams said. “It is clear that for the time being this crisis is going to be carried by the cities.”
He went on to say that “help is not on the way in the immediate future.”
In light of this, it is no surprise Adams would seek out the help of the incoming administration. Perhaps someone like Trump, who is serious about dealing with immigration, might offer some assistance.
